We Checked 22,349 LA County Businesses. 71% Have No Website.

By AI Website Help · August 1, 2026

Over June and July 2026 we pulled 22,349 business listings from Google across Los Angeles County and nearby Southern California, covering 28 everyday categories: salons, auto shops, dentists, gyms, dry cleaners, and more. Then we checked every single one for a working website. The results surprised even us.

71.2%

of scored businesses have no website listed on Google at all

7.5%

list a website that does not load when you click it

21.4%

have a website that actually works

The headline: most local businesses are invisible online

Of the 21,896 listings we could conclusively score, 15,588 had no website at all. Another 1,637 listed a URL that was dead, broken, or unreachable when we visited it, which for a customer is the same thing as nothing, except it also looks careless. Add those together and nearly 4 in 5 local businesses in one of America's largest markets cannot take a customer past their Google listing.

These are not hobby businesses. They are storefronts with staff, leases, and Google reviews, competing every day for customers who research everything on a phone before spending money.

The numbers by industry

The gap is not evenly distributed. Here is the share of businesses with no website in every category where we scored at least 100 listings:

What the pattern tells you

  • Appointment businesses are the most exposed. Dry cleaners (92%), car washes (80%), barbershops (79%), and beauty salons (78%) run on repeat local customers, yet they are the least likely to have a site. Most rely on walk-ins and Instagram, which works right up until a new customer wants to see prices and book at 9pm.
  • The trades already got the memo. Plumbers (33%) and HVAC companies (34%) have websites at double the rate of salons. When your average job is worth hundreds of dollars and starts with an emergency search, the site pays for itself fast, and those industries learned it years ago.
  • Even doctors are missing. 72% of the dentists we checked had no website on their listing. For a business where a new patient is worth thousands over a relationship, that is a remarkable amount of revenue left to whoever ranks instead.
The competitive flip side: in a category where 3 out of 4 competitors have no website, a fast, professional site with online booking does not just represent you, it makes you the default choice for every customer who researches before buying.

Why "we have Instagram" does not close the gap

The most common objection we hear from the businesses in this dataset is that social media covers it. It does not, and the reason is simple: Instagram reaches people who already follow you, and Google reaches people who are ready to buy. Someone searching "balayage near me" or "emergency dentist open now" is a customer with money in hand, and they land on whoever shows up with prices, reviews, and a booking button. We wrote a full breakdown of what each channel does and does not do in Do I Need a Website If I Have Instagram?

How we ran this

  • Source: public Google business listings across 28 local categories in Los Angeles County and nearby Southern California counties, collected June and July 2026.
  • Method:for each listing we recorded whether a website was listed, then fetched every listed site and scored what loaded. "No website" means the Google listing itself shows none.
  • Scope note: our categories skew toward storefront and service businesses, which is who we build for. This is not a census of every industry, and percentages describe the 21,896 listings we could conclusively score.
