Google Business Profile Optimization: The Complete Checklist

By AI Website Help · August 1, 2026

The map pack (the three businesses Google shows with a map) gets the click on most local searches, and which three appear is decided largely by profile completeness and activity. Here is every field that matters, in order of impact, plus the mistakes that quietly sink profiles.

The foundation (do these first)

  • Claim and verify the profile. Unclaimed profiles rank worse, and anyone can suggest edits to them, including competitors.
  • Exact name, no keyword stuffing.Your legal storefront name only. "Joe's Barber Shop Best Fades Downey" is a suspension waiting to happen, and competitors report it.
  • Primary category, chosen precisely. The single most powerful field on the profile. "Barber shop" and "hair salon" surface for different searches. Pick the one that matches your money service, then add secondary categories for the rest.
  • Address, service area, hours, phone. Complete, exact, and identical to what your website says. Google cross-checks, and mismatches erode trust in both. Holiday hours too: nothing burns a customer like driving to a closed door, and they review accordingly.
  • Website link. Profiles with a linked site give Google pages of evidence about what you do, and give customers somewhere to see prices and book. If you have no site, that is its own problem.

The differentiators (where most competitors stop)

  • Services with descriptions and prices.List every service as its own entry with a real description. These match against long searches ("walk-in beard trim near me") that the lazy profiles never catch.
  • Real photos, added monthly. Storefront, interior, team, work. Fresh photos signal an active business to Google and a real one to customers. Stock photos convince nobody.
  • Posts on a schedule. Offers, updates, before-and-afters. A profile posting weekly reads as open for business; one silent since 2024 reads as maybe closed.
  • Seed and answer the Q&A. Anyone can ask and, dangerously, anyone can answer. Post the ten questions customers actually ask (parking, walk-ins, payment) and answer them yourself before a stranger does it wrong.
  • Reviews, asked for and answered. Count, rating, recency, and your replies all feed rank and conversion. Full system in How to Get More Google Reviews.

The mistakes that sink profiles

  • Duplicate listings splitting your reviews and confusing Google about which is real. Find and merge them.
  • Ignoring "suggested edits." Google lets the public propose changes and often applies them silently. Check your info monthly; profiles get vandalized, sometimes by competitors.
  • Fake urgency tactics: keyword-stuffed names, fake addresses to appear in more cities, review swaps. Each one risks suspension, and a suspended profile takes weeks to appeal while customers find competitors.
  • Set-and-forget. The profile is a channel, not a directory entry. The businesses winning the map pack treat it like one.
Reality check for busy owners: the foundation list is a one-time afternoon. The differentiators are roughly an hour a week. That hour competes directly against businesses doing nothing, which, per our data on 22,349 LA businesses, is most of them.
